How Cosmelan® May Work

The Cosmelan® Method is a professionally guided program that involves a two-phase approach: a professional in-clinic application followed by a home care routine. It is designed to support a more even-looking complexion and is used in aesthetic settings to manage concerns related to pigmentation visibility.

The in-clinic phase typically involves applying a professional-strength mask that is left on the skin for a set number of hours, depending on your skin type and concerns. This is followed by a personalised at-home skincare routine designed to support ongoing results.

Cosmelan® is commonly applied to areas such as the face, neck, and décolletage, depending on your goals and practitioner recommendations.

Please note: Individual results can vary. A personalised assessment with a trained professional is recommended to determine whether this treatment is appropriate for your skin type and goals.

Your Cosmelan Journey

Preparation (4 weeks)

Your skin therapist may recommend using a Brightening Peel Booster daily to prepare the skin.

Treatment day: 8-12 hours

The Cosmelan® mask is applied in-clinic and worn for 8–12 hours before being removed at home, following your practitioner’s instructions.

Aftercare (up to 6 months)

A personalised home care plan will be provided to support skin recovery and help maintain results. This will be discussed during your consultation.

Results vary by individual. A consultation is required to determine suitability.

Pre + Post Cosmelan® Treatment Care

What to expect

During your in-clinic appointment, your skin will be prepared using a professional oil-removing solution to support even application of the peel. A tingling sensation and a distinct odour may be experienced during this step.

A thick, clay-coloured Cosmelan® mask will then be applied and needs to remain on the skin for approximately 8 to 12 hours, depending on your skin type and practitioner assessment. While wearing the mask, you’ll be advised to use a water mist (non-active) periodically to help maintain product hydration. Your clinician will guide you on suitable product options and how to use them.

After the recommended wear time, the mask should be gently removed at home using room-temperature water and soft, non-abrasive materials provided during your appointment. A calming cream will also be provided and can be applied before bed, as per the aftercare instructions.

Some individuals may notice temporary redness or warmth in the skin following removal. This is a normal part of the process and should ease in the following days.

Preparation

Before beginning your Cosmelan® treatment, a personalised consultation with a trained dermal technician is required to assess your skin condition and determine suitability. Your preparation may include an at-home skincare regimen for approximately 4 weeks prior to your treatment.

Aftercare Overview

  • First 24 hours: You may experience temporary redness, a sensation of heat, and minor swelling. Begin your provided aftercare as directed.
  • 48 hours: Redness and warmth may persist, along with some swelling and itchiness. Light peeling or flaking may begin.
  • 72 hours: Skin may continue to flake and itch mildly. You’ll also return for an LED Light Therapy session, if recommended by your clinician.
  • 1–8 weeks: Mild sensitivity may continue, along with visible flaking. Weekly LED treatments and additional aftercare products may be suggested to support skin recovery and results.

All recommendations will be tailored to your skin type and response, and your practitioner will guide you through each step of the process.

Frequently asked questions

Is cosmelan suitable for all skin types?

Cosmelan® may be suitable for a wide range of skin types and tones. However, suitability depends on several individual factors, including your skin condition, medical history, and Fitzpatrick skin type. A personalised consultation with a qualified dermal technician or medical practitioner is essential to determine whether Cosmelan® is appropriate and safe for you.

When can I expect to see results?

Results from Cosmelan® treatment can vary between individuals. Some people may begin to notice gradual improvements in skin tone and pigmentation within the first few weeks of treatment. Optimal results typically develop over several months with consistent use of the prescribed aftercare routine. Your results will depend on factors such as skin condition, adherence to aftercare, and individual response.

How long does the treatment take?

The full Cosmelan® Pigmentation Program spans approximately 7 months and includes three phases:

  • Pre-treatment phase (4 weeks): At-home skin preparation using specific products to optimise results and minimise risk.
  • In-clinic treatment day: Application of the Cosmelan® professional mask, which typically takes around 30 minutes. The mask remains on your skin for 8–12 hours (as advised by your practitioner) and is removed at home.

Post-treatment phase (6 months): A personalised home-care routine, including follow-up appointments and optional LED therapy sessions, to maintain results and reduce the chance of pigmentation recurrence.

How many treatments are required?

For many clients, one Cosmelan® Pigmentation Program may be sufficient to achieve noticeable improvements. However, treatment plans should always be tailored to your unique skin needs and concerns. Depending on the severity and cause of pigmentation, your provider may recommend additional treatments or maintenance protocols after 6 months.

When can I resume cosmetic treatments after Cosmelan® treatment?

Cosmetic treatments involving prescription-only products are typically resumed around 12 weeks (3 months) after your in-clinic Cosmelan® mask treatment, allowing your skin time to heal. Always consult with your practitioner before scheduling any procedure to ensure timing is appropriate for your skin’s recovery and safety..
